While improvements in body armor and advances in medical technology are improving survival rates, estimates reveal that one in four of our young soldiers are returning home with service-related disabilities. In fact, this war has the highest fatality-to-wounded ratio in U.S. history – 1 death per 16 wounded. The Vietnam ratio was 2.6 wounded per fatality. Now more than ever before, our nation’s disabled veterans will need support as they seek to establish productive lives, take care of their families and establish new careers. After returning home, our young heroes are working not only to adjust socially, but they are also competing professionally with their peers. Many are concerned they lack the competitive edge to obtain civilian employment, despite having developed superior leadership, teamwork and analytical skills through their military service. Programs such as Hire Heroes USA, which provides job placement assistance for all of our veterans, are instrumental in helping our returning soldiers succeed in today’s competitive market.
