Volunteer Spotlight: Libby

Volunteer Libby vow renewal

By volunteering, Libby helps our clients overcome some of the same challenges she faced as a military spouse.

Libby is the spouse of an active duty Navy pilot. She serves as an Attorney Advisor with the Department of Veterans Affairs and is also on the board of the Military Spouse J.D. Network. After relocating for her husband’s career, she thought, “I want to pass along that advice and motivation I had to other military families.”

Three years later, Libby has helped 19 veterans and military spouses working with Hire Heroes USA. Being a military spouse, Libby understands the challenges our clients are facing because she has experienced them first-hand.

“I’ve struggled with my own career continuity due to licensing and relocation challenges,” Libby said. “Fortunately, I found great mentors and received valuable advice along the way to keep me motivated until I found my current job that is both meaningful and portable – the military spouse jackpot!”

Q: Why do you volunteer with Hire Heroes USA?

“I volunteer with Hire Heroes USA because I understand the struggles of the job hunt. It takes courage to continue putting yourself out there for jobs after repeated rejections. It takes courage to be the new kid in town (again). It takes courage to survive yet another deployment while balancing child care with the demands of a new job. I want to help people and be the mentor that I had when I needed to stay motivated.”

11 Reasons to Support Hire Heroes USA

11Reasons Twitter

As we observe Veterans Day, our nation pauses to honor, and thank, the men and women who made the decision to serve and protect our country. At Hire Heroes USA, every day is Veterans Day because of the work we do to ensure that they can successfully find a career in the civilian workforce. Here are some of the reasons why you should care, too:

  1. Because the need is real. Every year approximately 250,000 military members separate from the U.S. Armed Forces.
  1. Because finding a job is what veterans want the most when they leave their military careers.
  1. Because we don’t forget military spouses. Through our Serving Spouses program, we also help these women and men, who face unique employment challenges due to frequent change of duty stations.
  1. Because our unique service delivery model is highly effective at putting veterans and military spouses to work. This year, we’ll reach another milestone – 30,000 lifetime hires since our founding.
  1. Because we have a holistic approach to the problem. Through our Employment Opportunities program, we partner with hundreds of employers, from small businesses to Fortune 100 companies, that want to hire veterans.
  1. Because we have an exclusive job board and virtual career fairs. This means we can connect employers directly with veteran and military spouse job seekers.
  1. Because our free employment services are constantly evolving to meet the needs of our clients. Today, our services are almost entirely virtual.
  1. Because our total focus is on employment. We are the leading veteran service organization specifically targeting unemployment and underemployment among veterans
  1. Because our staff really does care. Most of our team is comprised of veterans, military spouses and individuals from military families.
  1. Because Hire Heroes USA is an excellent steward of your donations. We are the highest rated veteran nonprofit organization on Charity Navigator and have a GuideStar Platinum Seal of Transparency.
  1. Because we owe them. Veterans and military spouses have made a sacrifice for our country, and they deserve to have gainful employment after they leave the military.

The reasons to support Hire Heroes USA’s work don’t stop there. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of veterans and their families.  Check out our 11 Reasons campaign here.

Hire Heroes USA Cites Veteran Employment as Key Issue in U.S. this Veterans Day

National nonprofit launches campaign, events to raise funds and awareness to honor veterans

In an announcement timed to coincide with the upcoming Veterans Day holiday on November 11, Hire Heroes USA today stressed that veteran unemployment and underemployment remain key issues in the United States, despite low national unemployment rates.

Today, the national nonprofit launched its 11 Reasons fundraising and awareness campaign that highlights just some of the thousands of stories shared by the men and women who seek its free employment services each year. Campaign donations will support Hire Heroes USA’s mission to empower transitioning military members, veterans and military spouses to succeed in the civilian workforce.

“On Veterans Day, we honor and recognize everyone who has taken the oath to protect and defend this country, by serving in the U.S. Armed Forces,” said Hire Heroes USA CEO Christopher Plamp, a retired Air Force combat pilot. “Once these men and women leave the service, it’s up to us, as Americans, to ensure that they can provide for themselves and their families. Securing a job in the civilian workforce is the first step.”

The nonprofit will host a series of events and initiatives between now and November 12, when Veterans Day will be observed as a federal holiday:

  • Virtual Career Events for Veterans – Hire Heroes USA is holding a Virtual Career Fair that features a variety of job opportunities offered by more than 30 employers. It also has a Virtual Federal Career Transition Workshop set for November 6 that will provide veterans, military spouses and transitioning military members with expert guidance on navigating a federal job search. Registration is still open.
  • American Patriots Gala – On November 2, Hire Heroes USA welcomes Medal of Honor Recipient Kyle Carpenter as the keynote speaker at its 2nd Annual American Patriots Gala in the Atlanta metro. The organization’s Founder’s Award will be presented to Zac Brown and the Pacesetter Award will be presented to Thomas Meyer. Awards will also be given to three volunteer mentors for their work to support veterans.
  • Corporate Partnerships for Veterans – Pilot Flying J will partner with Hire Heroes USA to host a Career Panel and Networking Eventthat is open to service members, veterans and military spouses on November 8. The veteran-founded company will join forces with Hire Heroes USA to provide a career and search-focused panel discussion, as well as the opportunity to network with Pilot Flying J and other local companies.
  • For the second year in a row, Siemens provided support to Hire Heroes USA in honor of Veterans Day. This year, Siemens Mobility, Inc. is working with the nonprofit to help more veterans access opportunities within the transportation industry.
  • VetsAid Concert – Hire Heroes USA was selected again this year as one of the charity partners of the VetsAid concert, which takes place on Veterans Day and will be headlined by Grammy award-winning musician Joe Walsh. This year’s event, which takes place in Tacoma, Washington, will include performances by Don Henley, James Taylor, Chris Stapleton, Haim, and a special appearance by Ringo Starr. Proceeds will benefit the mission of Hire Heroes USA, among other veterans service organizations.

Hire Heroes USA, which is now in its 11th year, provides free employment services to transitioning military, veterans and military spouses across the United States and around the world. Those services include resume, networking and interview assistance, online workshops and training modules, job matching, and a job board that averages 15,000 listings each month.
