Volunteer Spotlight: Andrea

Volunteer Spotlight: Andrea

Since she was young, Andrea Kislik understood the importance of serving others. Whether it was a community service event or an opportunity to volunteer, Andrea wanted to help. When COVID-19 sent veteran unemployment to its highest recorded rate and canceled in-person events, she was compelled to join the Hire Heroes USA volunteer team.

“I saw a post on LinkedIn about virtual volunteering with Hire Heroes USA. I quickly realized this was a safe way for me to volunteer and make a positive impact in the world,” Andrea said.

From her very first call with a Hire Heroes USA client, it was clear that Andrea cared deeply about the person on the other end of the line. She used her personal experience of changing careers and shifting industries multiple times to inform and inspire veterans and military spouses going through a similar transition.

“When speaking with clients, I talk about my experience of feeling lost and confused and how I moved on to bigger and better opportunities,” she said.  “I can relate to the concerns of uncertainty the clients have about retiring and transitioning from military to civilian positions.”

Since Andrea started as a volunteer with Hire Heroes USA, she has taken extra steps to ensure success for her clients. She attended her first Volunteer Advisory Committee meeting in January and takes diligent notes during each of her phone sessions with clients.

It’s part of the reason why so many of the veterans and spouses who speak with her find success in their job search.

“I often smile and cry at the same time when reading emails I receive from clients,” Andrea said. “I have spoken with sixteen clients and each client is unique in their own way. Many of my clients have started new positions. I always enjoy hearing about their new work experiences and how thankful the client is for my advice.”

Hire Heroes Employer of the Year: Amazon

In partnership with the Institute for Veterans and Military Families, Hire Heroes USA is proud to recognize the 2020 Employer of the Year: Amazon. The selection process for this year’s honor took into account each employer’s involvement within the military community, as well as their track record of actively interviewing and hiring veterans and military spouses. Since day one of our partnership, Amazon has made a significant impact on the lives of veterans and military spouses through their unwavering commitment.

2020 brought some of the most precarious situations, many of which were unprecedented for our country. Amazon acted quickly and purposefully, establishing a series of webinars to provide strategic guidance on “full-cycle career hunting” with Amazon. Topics included resume best-practices, interview tips and many heartfelt testimonials from the military community at Amazon. These webinars were made available to transitioning military members, veterans and their spouses and facilitated opportunities in Operations, Robotics and Information Technology. Amazon’s military and military spouses virtual hiring initiatives rose far above entry-level opportunities and yielded over 5,000 registrants across a six month series. Month after month, Amazon’s webinars broke organizational records for attendance and empowered thousands of veterans and military spouses to successfully navigate their career search.

Amazon didn’t stop at webinars – the Amazon Military Affairs team diversified and reimagined recruitment tactics to reach candidates through creative advertisements, targeted messaging and direct talent pipelining. Throughout 2020, approximately 1,244 Hire Heroes USA clients were sent directly to Amazon and Amazon Web Services recruiters for mid-level management roles and 43 of those individuals were hired for positions with compensation ranging from $50,000 to $150,000 with full relocation benefits. In total, nearly 400 Hire Heroes USA clients were hired by Amazon into roles across the organization from Operations Management to Software Engineering, Human Resource Management, Project Coordination and more.

Hire Heroes USA is grateful for our continued partnership with Amazon and we look forward to assisting more veterans and military spouses in their search for fulfilling careers in 2021.
