Biomedical Equipment Technology (BMET)
HCC’s Biomedical Equipment Technology (BMET) Apprenticeship Program creates a pathway for both aspiring and current professionals to excel in the medical industry. BMETs install, maintain, and repair medical equipment and devices used in clinical environments, including hospitals, clinicals, and other locations where patient care is administered. Over a period of three and a half years, apprentices learn how to test, adjust, monitor, and repair medical equipment, with focus on optimizing operational efficiency to assure patient care can be provided safely. This is accomplished through completion of 46 course credits and 6,000 hours of paid, on-the-job learning, taking place in partnership with healthcare employers across the state of Maryland. Graduates of this program earn an associate of applied science degree. HCC is the only college in Maryland that offers a program of this kind.

Surgical Technologist
HCC’s Surgical Technologist Apprenticeship program is designed to give aspiring healthcare professionals the foundational knowledge and skills needed to work in a hospital operating room environment. Apprentices will assist in operating room set-up, preparation and transportation of surgical patients, and clinical assistance during surgical cases, working in collaboration with surgeons and nurses. Key roles and responsibilities might include adjusting lighting and operating room equipment prior to and during cases, securing and handing off surgical instrumentation, positioning and holding retractors, cutting sutures, and taking inventory of supplies prior to and at the closure of operative cases. Apprentices will complete 40 on-the-job training work competencies over the course of 12–16 months. Upon successful completion, apprentices will be eligible to receive the nationally recognized Surgical Technologist certificate through the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT).

Licensed Practical Nurse
HCC’s Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) apprenticeship program is a pathway for aspiring or current professionals to excel in the healthcare industry. Apprentices will work under the direction of doctors and registered nurses in a variety of healthcare settings. Key roles and responsibilities might include: providing safe, effective, efficient care and treatment to patients; performing procedures for biological specimen collection, transport, and disposal; Identifying and reporting relevant patient information to practitioners; assisting providers and nurses with the preparation of equipment before and during treatment; communicating effectively with guests, visitors, clients, patients, and the health care team; and functioning as an effective team member. Apprentices will complete 39 on-the-job training work competencies over the course of two years. Upon successful completion, apprentices will be eligible to receive their Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) certification from the Maryland Board of Nursing.
