Women in Non-Traditional Employment Roles

Founded in 1996, Women In Non-Traditional Employment Roles (WINTER) is a not-for-profit organization based in the Greater Los Angeles/Orange Counties. Their mission is to promote gender equity in the construction industry by providing apprenticeship readiness training to low-income women. They are certified by the CA Department of Industrial Relations and National North America’s Building Trades Unions and offer a comprehensive curriculum for women interested in construction trades. WINTER focuses on three goals: increasing the percentage of women in union construction, promoting non-traditional jobs for low-income women, and preparing them with essential skills through training, case management, mentorship, job placement, and retention services for up to five years. Workshops for Warriors ( provides veterans and active duty transitioning service members with accelerated training, certifications, and job placement assistance in welding, CNC machining, CAD/CAM programming, 3-D printing and more. Since 2012, WFW’s more than 1,100 graduates have earned over 12,200 nationally-recognized certifications and are working in every state in the nation. WFW students are provided opportunities for career training and to meet one-on-one with potential employers during their 16-week programs which are offered three times per year. NS2 Serves™ is an independent, nonprofit 501©(3) organization established by SAP National Security Services, Inc. (SAP NS2®) to give back to the community it serves by training and employing veterans in high-tech careers. Surgical Technician Apprenticeship

HCC surgical technologist apprenticeship program is designed to give aspiring healthcare professionals the foundational knowledge and skills needed to work in a hospital operating room environment. Surgical technician apprentices will complete a series of courses at HCC and will work full time at local hospitals as entry-level surgical assistants. Key roles and responsibilities include operating room set up, preparation and transport of surgical patients, and clinical assistance during surgical cases, working in collaboration with surgeons and nurses. Surgical technicians play an important role in assuring surgical cases are streamlined and efficient. They adjust lighting and operating room equipment prior to and during cases, secure and hand off surgical instrumentation, position and hold retractors, cut sutures, and take inventory of supplies prior to and at the closure of operative cases. Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN)

Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) generally work under the supervision of Registered Nurses as members of health care teams in extended care facilities and clinics. Apprentices will be primarily responsible for delivering basic care for patients with commonly occurring health problems. Army Smart

Army Smart is a nonprofit that provides free college-level tutoring to service members and veterans. It has tutored more than 500 students and teach everything from math and engineering to writing and history.

Army Smart understands how hard it is to transfer out of the military and into higher education. Nearly all of its tutors are veterans who successfully transitioned out of the military to go to college and understand the journey. The rest of its tutors are active duty service members. Construction Management Apprenticeship

Howard Community College’s Construction Management Apprenticeship Program allows students to pursue an exciting and dynamic career path in an industry that is rapidly growing. Students complete a series of courses and lab work, coupled with 4,000 hours of paid field work over a period of two years. During this time, apprentices are exposed to every facet of the construction industry – from architectural and engineering roles to the many logistics involved in general contracting, from safety and regulatory guidelines to project planning, site surveying, blueprint reading and material testing. Upon completion of the program, apprentices are presented a Construction Management Certificate from HCC and are eligible to take the Certified Construction Manager-in-Training (CMIT) exam. Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, & Refrigeration Apprenticeship (HVACR)

HCC’s HVACR Apprenticeship Program is designed to cultivate the next generation of skilled technicians to work in the heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration industry – in both residential and commercial environments. Apprentices acquire a diverse skill set, learning how to insulate refrigerant lines, clean furnaces, cut and solder pipes, and maintain and repair electrical circuits. Working in partnership with Heating and Air Conditioning Contractors of Maryland (HACCMD), students enrolled in HCC’s HVACR Apprenticeship Program complete a total of 8,000 hours of paid field work over a period of four years, while completing required coursework at HCC. In tandem, apprentices can pursue Maryland State HVACR journeyman licensure through the State of Maryland’s Apprenticeship and Training Council. Click here to learn more.

Electrical Apprenticeship

HCC provides students an opportunity to gain the skills needed for success through its comprehensive Electrical Apprenticeship Program. The four-year experience is facilitated in partnership with the Independent Electrical Contractors (IEC) Chesapeake, recognized as the Mid Atlantic Region’s premier electrical and renewable energy contractor association. Apprentices complete a series of courses, concentrating on electrical theory, equipment, and safety protocols, for use in both commercial and residential environments. While completing coursework, students also work full-time as electricians in partnership with local employers. HCC’s Electrical Apprenticeship Program is approved by the Maryland Department of Labor’s Office of Apprenticeship Training, and graduates are eligible to receive nationally-recognized credentials as journeyman electricians. Plumbing Apprenticeships

The demand for professionals who are trained to install, maintain, and repair plumbing systems is constant and rapidly growing. HCC’s Plumbing Apprenticeship Program is designed to cultivate the next generation of skilled technicians to work in the plumbing industry – in both residential and commercial environments. Apprentices acquire a diverse skill set, learning how to install and repair pipes that carry liquids or gases to and in businesses, homes, and factories. Plumbers typically install pipes and fixtures, study blueprints and follow state and local building codes, inspect and test installed pipe systems and pipelines, and troubleshoot systems that are not working. Working in partnership with Associated Builders & Contractors, students enrolled in ABC’s Plumbing Apprenticeship Program complete a total of 8,000 hours of paid field work over a period of four years, while completing required coursework at HCC. The Telecommunications Industry Registered Apprentice­ship Program—TIRAP—is an earn as you learn program that is about more than a job. This nationally recognized program will prepare you for a rewarding career with high growth po­tential. Intuit proudly provides online training and employs talented military veterans and their spouses. Like military families and veterans, Intuit is committed to excellence, motivated by mission, and driven by a sense of purpose. The Intuit Military and Veteran Initiative is Intuit’s commitment to help transform the lives of military families and veterans through community, jobs and financial empowerment. Intuit currently offers an online set of courses and a certification for bookkeeping via Coursera and Certiport/PearsonVUE. You don’t need any prior bookkeeping experience or a college degree. They will help you get the foundational skills you need to apply for a remote bookkeeping role at Intuit with QuickBooks Live. If you are interested in Tax, Intuit offers online tax courses to earn a badge via Intuit Academy. They will help you get the skills you need to apply for a remote tax role at Intuit with TurboTax Live.

Bio Medical Equipment Technology Apprenticeship (BMET)

Howard Community College’s (HCC) BMET Apprenticeship Program creates a pathway for both aspiring and current professionals to excel in the medical industry. BMETs install, maintain, and repair medical equipment and devices used in clinical environments, including hospitals, clinicals, and other locations where patient care is administered. Over a period of three and a half years, apprentices learn how to test, adjust, monitor, and repair medical equipment, with focus on optimizing operational efficiency to assure patient care can be provided safely. This is accomplished through completion of 46 course credits and 6,000 hours of paid, on-the-job learning, taking place in partnership with healthcare employers across the state of Maryland. Information Technology Apprenticeship (IT)

HCC’s IT Apprenticeship Program is facilitated in partnership with the AT&T’s public sector organization. Once accepted in to the program, apprentices interview for placement into one of four entry-level roles at AT&T: IT Field Support Specialist, which supports equipment installation, troubleshooting, and maintenance needs; Network Field Support Specialist, with concentration on testing existing networks for functionality and security; Information Systems Security Engineer, which develops and recommends mitigation strategies; or Linux System Administrator, which updates software and ensures proper security protocols are performed on computers using the Linux platform. IT apprenticeships are completed over a course of three to four years and include up to 4,000 hours of paid field experience. In tandem, apprentices work to earn security clearance, with AT&T as their sponsor, and are eligible or full-time employment at AT&T thereafter. Click here to learn more. 

Software Development Apprenticeship

Eager to pursue a career where coding software, managing databases, and coordinating network builds is part of the everyday scope of work? HCC’s Software Development Apprenticeship Program is designed to give you the jumpstart you need for long-term success. Over a period of two years, software development apprentices complete a series of both credit and non-credit courses at HCC, while pursuing 3,000 hours of paid field work in tandem, through the college’s partnership with NewWave Technologies. Apprentices are hired to serve as software developers, who apply computer science and coding skills to design or modify software and applications; computer system engineers, who facilitate workflows between developers, engineers, and clients; and data warehousing specialists, who develop data storage and processing solutions, and analyze and extract data to support data warehousing. The Women Veterans Leadership Program

The Women Veterans Leadership Program (WVLP) provides leadership skills and knowledge for women veterans to build a movement so they can pursue equal opportunities for all women in leadership attainment. The program’s curriculum is carefully designed to equip women with skills and knowledge to overcome systemic challenges that all women face in their rise to leadership as well as tools for overcoming those barriers research shows are unique to women veterans. WVLP members will have opportunities to engage a nationwide network of women leaders and The Mission Continues staff throughout the five months of the program and beyond. After completion of the program, graduates will gain access to a growing alumni network and be eligible for additional mentorship and leadership opportunities to help grow a veteran-led movement of service. The Service Leadership Corps

The Service Leadership Corps is a leadership development opportunity for veterans to expand their network and maximize their skills to drive change efforts specific to their local communities. Corps members work individually and in small groups, learning about the very real and current challenges our country is facing in communities nationwide, and how to activate local veterans and community members to serve together. The Brewing and Distilling Center

For military veterans, the Brewing and Distilling Center (BDC) continues to provide opportunities to secure jobs and careers in the fun and rapidly-expanding beer and spirits industry. Utilizing your Post 911/GI Bill Educational Benefits, the BDC can expertly train you to gain entry-level positions or even start your own brewery or distillery. The BDC’s Professional Brewing/Distilling Technology (PBDT) certificate program has two options: 13 weeks at 12 hours weekly and 6 weeks at 28 hours weekly. Both options contain 154 contact hours and provide classroom technical education and hands-on skill-training, like brewing, distilling, laboratory work, flavor, and beer style tasting, among many other skills and experiences. ManpowerGroup and Rockwell Automation have partnered to create The Academy of Advanced Manufacturing is a 12-week, expense-free intensive program, designed specifically for veterans. AAM combines technical classroom training and hands-on lab experience with professional development and soft skills training necessary to become a highly trained Automation/Instrumentation/Controls Technician. AAM takes care of your expenses during the 12 weeks of certification training including lodging, food, computer, tools, software, hardware and transportation to and from the training facility in addition to a modest salary for 40 -46 hours of training each week.
