Onward to Opportunity (O2O) is a collaboration between the U.S. Department of Defense, the Schultz Family Foundation, and the Institute for Veterans and Military Families at Syracuse University to bring no cost civilian career training to eligible military members and their spouses. In partnership with Onward to Opportunity, Hire Heroes USA will provide personalized career coaching and mentoring to participants as they complete their training. We will also work with partnered employers to match hiring criteria with a participant’s experience and skills. Then, we will coordinate interviews on behalf of the participants with employers. Code Platoon is a nonprofit organization that prepares veterans for careers in software development. The training program is a 14-week, on-site program that teaches veterans everything they need to know to be successful junior developers using the Ruby on Rails stack. Unlike other code boot camps, Code Platoon is for veterans only. The demand for software developers is growing. Yet, job-seeking veterans struggle to find work. The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local Union 11 and the Los Angeles County Chapter of the National Electrical Contractors Association offer several different apprenticeship programs through the Electrical Training Institute that are “earn as you learn” in the field that you choose. Currently they offer four different programs in the Los Angeles area:
Inside Wireman: A five-year program of on-the-job and classroom training in all commercial and industrial electrical applications, including installation of power and light, controls, and all types of electrical equipment.
Intelligent Transportation Systems: A four-year program consisting of both on-the-job and classroom training in innovative traffic signal, street lighting, and freeway systems technology.
Voice Data Video: A complete program incorporating on-the-job training and six semesters of related classroom training, leading to the classification of VDV installer.
Residential Program: A new three-year program incorporating on-the-job and related classroom instruction in residential wiring and electrical construction.
Approximately 50% of each class consisting of veterans. The testing requirement is waived for veterans who: served at least four years; were honorably discharged; and, are within 5 years of their separation date at the time of their application to the program. This program offers a great avenue to a new post-military career! There is no cost for the apprenticeship program, which is accredited by both the Department of Labor and the Department of Veteran Affairs.

The EnCorps STEM Military Pathway transitions military veterans and spouses – who have experience in science, technology, engineering, and math fields – into middle and high school teachers. The Fellowship is a rigorous on-ramp and exploration of a teaching career — offering you the field experience, knowledge and connections to ensure you thrive. Fellowship Applications for the 2018 cohort will be accepted through April 13, 2018. EnCorps will re-open its annual Fellowship application cycle in July 2018 for the 2019 Cohort. No current teaching credential or prior experience with students is required.

Long Beach City College‘s award-winning, nationally recognized Workforce Development Department provides high-quality, career-focused training. Programs are designed to match current industry needs, and to position students and workers for success with the support of industry-certified training, as well as a dedicated faculty and staff.
Harbor Driver Training Program – This 14-week training program offers instruction, certification and licensing for commercial truck drivers (CDL Class A) qualified to haul hazardous freight and cleared to operate within the Los Angeles and Long Beach port complexes. This training program prepares students for careers as short-haul truck drivers and assists graduates with job placement within the local port trucking industry.
These programs are offered are at no cost to participants and job placement assistance is provided at the completion of the program. The FDM Veterans Initiative provides paid, no-cost vocational training in disciplines with both a business and technical focus, followed by commercial employment working with our prestigious clients as IT professionals. Accommodation assistance is available for out-of-state candidates who are not currently based in a commutable distance of either our NYC or metro DC center. A number of FDM’s courses have been reviewed and approved by American Military University for the award of up to 21 semester hour credits towards a Bachelor of Science degree in Information Technology. FDM is also a vendor with the Department of Veterans Affairs under the Chapter 31 Vocational Rehabilitation and Education Program.
Following completion of the training, successful candidates represent FDM on client sites and support our clients’ technology and business requirements for a minimum of 2 years as FDM Consultants. FDM works with more than 160 prestigious clients around the globe in a number of exciting industries. Our trained FDM Consultants work in specialties including: Software Development; Application Support; Info/Cyber Security, Risk, Regulation and Compliance; DevOps; Project / Business Analysis; and more.
In addition to passing FDM’s Assessment Day, which evaluates your technical aptitude and ability to successfully complete the training, applicants should possess the following:
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- An analytical approach and problem solving abilities
- Proven ability to work under pressure and in fast-paced environments
- Excellent attention to detail and time management abilities
- Able to commit to work for FDM for a minimum of two years
- Available to complete the paid training at FDM’s NYC or Reston, VA center (training ranges from 10-16 weeks, depending on the stream)
