Training Programs Hire Heroes USA is partnering with organizations that connect transitioning military members, veterans and spouses with great training opportunities. After researching these programs, we believe they will be beneficial for our clients. The organizations featured on this page offer free training to Hire Heroes USA clients or partial or full scholarships for training programs.

Note: This effort launched in December 2015 and our list of partners continues to grow, so be sure to check back for the latest information on all of the opportunities that are available.


 

O2O Logo

Onward to Opportunity (O2O) is a collaboration between the U.S. Department of Defense, the Schultz Family Foundation, and the Institute for Veterans and Military Families at Syracuse University to bring no cost civilian career training to eligible military members and their spouses. In partnership with Onward to Opportunity, Hire Heroes USA will provide personalized, virtual career coaching and mentoring to participants in this program as they complete their training. Hire Heroes USA will also work with partnered employers to match hiring criteria with a participant’s experience and skills. Then, Hire Heroes USA will coordinate interviews, on behalf of the participants, with employers. Currently there are two industry tracks: Customer Service Excellence, and Information Technology. These tracks align with requested, in-demand skill sets, as defined by partner industry leaders. Upon successful completion of the training, participants have the opportunity to be interviewed by one of the partnered employers for valid openings in their organizations. The training program is a 14-week, on-site program that teaches veterans everything they need to know to be successful junior developers using the Ruby on Rails stack.

    Unlike other code boot camps, Code Platoon is for veterans only.

Electrical Training Institute

The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local Union 11 and the Los Angeles County Chapter of the National Electrical Contractors Association offer several different apprenticeship programs through the Electrical Training Institute that are “earn as you learn” in the field that you choose. Currently they offer four different programs in the Los Angeles area:

Inside Wireman: A five-year program of on-the-job and classroom training in all commercial and industrial electrical applications, including installation of power and light, controls, and all types of electrical equipment.

Intelligent Transportation Systems: A four-year program consisting of both on-the-job and classroom training in innovative traffic signal, street lighting, and freeway systems technology.

Voice Data Video: A complete program incorporating on-the-job training and six semesters of related classroom training, leading to the classification of VDV installer.

Residential Program: A new three-year program incorporating on-the-job and related classroom instruction in residential wiring and electrical construction. 

This program is extremely veteran friendly, with approximately 50% of each class consisting of veterans. The testing requirement is waived for veterans who: served at least four years; were honorably discharged; and, are within 5 years of their separation date at the time of their application to the program. This program offers a great avenue to a new post-military career! There is NO COST for the apprenticeship program, which is accredited by both the Department of Labor and the Department of Veteran Affairs.

The process for application, testing (if required), documentation validation, and interviews takes approximately 60 days until program start dates.

ClaimVets

ClaimVets is a national, registered 501(c)(3), non-profit organization dedicated to  providing transitioning military veterans and their spouses free training, licensing, and job placement as an insurance claims adjuster and more.

ClaimVets will provide transitioning Military Service Members, currently serving National Guard and Reserve Members, Military Retirees, Veterans, and Military Spouses with a pathway to enter the commercial insurance claims profession by providing access to adjuster and office skills training programs, adjuster licenses, career mentoring, job placement services, and relocation assistance. Continuing educational opportunities provided as well. Salary potential is between $45,000 up to $75,000 depending on position and company placed with!

EnCorps

The EnCorps Science Technology Engineering Mathematics (STEM) Military Pathway builds upon our success in helping transition STEM professionals into teachers by recruiting military veterans who have a passion for STEM knowledge and its application. The EnCorps STEM Military Pathway recruits, selects, trains and supports experienced STEM professionals from the military into new careers as teachers, providing children in low-performing schools with excellent math and science education.

EnCorps has partnered with the federal organization Troops to Teachers, a US Department of Defense program that helps eligible military personnel begin new careers as teachers in public schools.

Once connected to EnCorps, military veterans are able to access our application process in the same way that all other applicants can. EnCorps staff takes special care to accommodate veterans’ specific requests and needs.

California is short 3,000 teachers in STEM subjects for education this year alone. The regions that the STEM works includes Sacramento, Bay Area, Los Angeles, Orange County and San Diego County. 

Fellowship Applications for the 2016 fall cycle of our STEM Teachers Program will be accepted through May 15th, 2016. EnCorps will re-open its annual Fellowship application cycle in September, 2016 for fall, 2017 Fellowships.

Successful candidates will receive pre-service temporary positions; leading to full-time teaching in Career Technical Education (CTE) or Single Subject Teaching Credential pathways. An alternate track for (part-time) Expert STEM tutors (STEM X) is also available and supported by EnCorps.

Successful screened candidates will begin Fellowships with their comprehensive three-day seminar in Berkeley, CA on 24-26 June, 2016 (travel and per diem are covered) for EnCorps Fellowship. Pre-service placement in “convenient” high-need schools will be made for Fellows this summer among internship, guest teaching or tutoring assignments. 

Successful STEM Teaching Fellows and educators will be supported by the EnCorps ecosystem throughout their service pathway and careers in STEM teaching. Navigation and professional development aids (at no cost) are: volunteer placement and support, certificate / credential assistance, test study guides, public school and district networking, regular professional development, mentoring and peer support. 

Requirements and Experience for Military Veterans, Retirees and Spouses / Partners

  • A minimum of three years of experience in a STEM professional  position
  • An undergraduate (BA / BS degree) – preferably in a STEM academic or career topic – with a GPA of 2.50 or higher.
  • Ability to work in the USA (I-9)

No current teaching credential is required.

Startup Our Vets Veterans Fellowship

Veterans and active service members possess the work ethic, high character, and strong leadership skills needed to launch meaningful and enduring technology companies.

To inspire and enable the military community to build technology companies, the Founder Institute, the world’s premier idea-stage accelerator and startup launch program, has partnered with Vet-Tech, the nation’s leading startup accelerator for military veterans, to offer the “Startup Our Veterans” Fellowship.

As part of this program, any U.S. veteran or service member who wants to start a technology company can apply to a U.S. Founder Institute chapter for free, and the best overall applicants from participating cities will receive a Fellowship to participate in the Founder Institute’s step-by-step startup launch program for free as well.

The program offers startup Executive training through a part-time, 14-week program. Allowing for participants to expand their national network with the Founder Institute’s world-class mentors. Additionally, participants will receive over $1M of free resources upon graduation.

Long Beach City College’s award-winning, nationally recognized Workforce Development Department provides high-quality, career-focused training. Programs are designed to match current industry needs, and to position students and workers for success with the support of industry-certified training, as well as a dedicated faculty and staff. 

  • Harbor Driver Training Program – This 14-week training program offers instruction, certification and licensing for commercial truck drivers (CDL Class A) qualified to haul hazardous freight and cleared to operate within the Los Angeles and Long Beach port complexes. This training program prepares students for careers as short-haul truck drivers and assists graduates with job placement within the local port trucking industry.
  • LINCS Supply Chain Management – LINCS is a national, entry-level supply chain management education and certification program targeted at new, as well as employed, workers in this field. LBCC is part of a national consortium of 12 colleges and universities that have developed eight new industry recognized certification training programs in supply chain management. Training classes are less than 40 hours and prepare participants to take the SCPro Fundamentals certification exam offered by the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals.
  • Construction Pre-Apprenticeship Program – This six-week, 140-hour training program prepares participants for union apprenticeship or employment in the construction field and provides industry recognized certificates upon completion of the program. Subjects include cabinet making, cement masonry, green technologies, H.V.A.C., plumbing, and surveying. Participants will receive three industry recognized certificates: Building Trades Multi-Craft Core Curriculum (“MC3”), 10-hour OSHA Certification, and a CPR and First Aid Training Certification.
  • Heavy Duty Preventative Maintenance and Alternative Fuels – This three-week, 80-hour course prepares participants for career opportunities as heavy duty alternative fuels technicians and mechanics. Created in partnership with Republic Services, a nationwide recycling and solid waste management company, this course addresses a shortage of qualified technicians in the industry. Upon successful completion of the program, participants will be prepared to take the Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) Fuel System Inspector Certification test.

Technician Training

Asbury Technical Institute (ATI) is a technical training center designed by Asbury Automotive Group to recruit and train its own technicians. This entry-level course provides automotive technicians with the basic skill set to be able to safely perform common tasks. The 12-week training course is held Monday through Friday from 7am to 4pm and teaches fundamentals of the shop:

  • Engine systems
  • Transmissions
  • Suspension and steering
  • Brakes
  • Electrical heating
  • Air conditioning
  • Safety

These classes were designed with manufacturers to make sure industry demands for skill set are met. You will get hands-on experience with both import and domestic brands.  This course offers a salary while you are in training. You will also receive a tool kit and be placed in an Asbury dealership upon graduation.

Prior to enrollment each candidate should possess the following:

  • Verbal & written communication skills
  • Technical aptitude
  • Attention to detail
  • Problem solving ability

Accommodation assistance is available for out-of-state candidates who are not currently based in a commutable distance of either our NYC or metro DC center. A number of FDM’s courses have been reviewed and approved by American Military University for the award of up to 21 semester hour credits towards a Bachelor of Science degree in Information Technology. FDM is also a vendor with the Department of Veterans Affairs under the Chapter 31 Vocational Rehabilitation and Education Program.

Following completion of the training, successful candidates represent FDM on client sites and support our clients’ technology and business requirements for a minimum of 2 years as FDM Consultants. FDM works with more than 160 prestigious clients around the globe in a number of exciting industries. Our trained FDM Consultants work in specialties including: Software Development; Application Support; Info/Cyber Security, Risk, Regulation and Compliance; DevOps; Project / Business Analysis; and more.
