Onward to Opportunity (O2O) is a collaboration between the U.S. Department of Defense, the Schultz Family Foundation, and the Institute for Veterans and Military Families at Syracuse University to bring no cost civilian career training to eligible military members and their spouses. The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local Union 11 and the Los Angeles County Chapter of the National Electrical Contractors Association offer several different apprenticeship programs through the Electrical Training Institute that are “earn as you learn” in the field that you choose. Currently they offer four different programs in the Los Angeles area:

Inside Wireman: A five-year program of on-the-job and classroom training in all commercial and industrial electrical applications, including installation of power and light, controls, and all types of electrical equipment.

Intelligent Transportation Systems: A four-year program consisting of both on-the-job and classroom training in innovative traffic signal, street lighting, and freeway systems technology.

Voice Data Video: A complete program incorporating on-the-job training and six semesters of related classroom training, leading to the classification of VDV installer.

Residential Program: A new three-year program incorporating on-the-job and related classroom instruction in residential wiring and electrical construction. 

Approximately 50% of each class consisting of veterans. The testing requirement is waived for veterans who: served at least four years; were honorably discharged; and, are within 5 years of their separation date at the time of their application to the program. This program offers a great avenue to a new post-military career! There is no cost for the apprenticeship program, which is accredited by both the Department of Labor and the Department of Veteran Affairs.

Harbor Driver Training Program This 14-week training program offers instruction, certification and licensing for commercial truck drivers (CDL Class A) qualified to haul hazardous freight and cleared to operate within the Los Angeles and Long Beach port complexes. Apprenti provides a proven pathway for underrepresented groups, including veterans, to gain training, certification and placement within the talent-hungry tech industry. Through registered apprenticeship, apprentices gain the technical training, certifications and on-the-job training necessary to transition into tech occupations, such as Data Center Technician, Software Developer, Network Security Administrator and more. If selected, apprentices receive 3-5 months of full-time technical training before going to one year of paid on-the-job training with an employer. FDM small_logoThe FDM Veterans Initiative provides no-cost vocational training in disciplines with both a business and technical focus, followed by commercial employment working with our prestigious clients as IT professionals. Accommodation assistance is available for out-of-state candidates who aren’t currently based within a commutable distance of our NYC or metro DC centers. A number of FDM’s courses have been reviewed and approved by American Military University for the award of up to 21 semester hour credits towards a Bachelor of Science degree in Information Technology. FDM is also a vendor with the Department of Veterans Affairs under the Chapter 31 Vocational Rehabilitation and Education Program.

Following completion of training, successful candidates represent FDM on client sites and support our clients’ technology and business requirements for a minimum of 2 years as FDM Consultants. FDM works with more than 160 prestigious clients around the globe in a number of exciting industries. Our trained FDM Consultants work in specialties including: Software Development; Application Support; Info/Cyber Security, Risk, Regulation and Compliance; DevOps; Project / Business Analysis; and more. The Heavy Construction Academy of Brentwood, NH trains and certifies men and women to operate nine state of the art pieces of heavy machinery. They combine hands-on training with classroom instruction to provide each student with the skills to succeed.

Their career services program will assist students in transitioning into the construction industry. Their 6-week training and certification program has proven results with many of our students acquiring high paying jobs upon graduation.

Their graduates find jobs on civil works projects, urban infrastructure projects, site development, waste management and road building. Based on statistics from the Department of Labor, in many areas the median wage of an experienced operator is over $52,000/year and the opportunities don’t end there. HCA has in-house aide for job searches, coaching and resume writing to help them throughout the process.

The Academy also provides all students lodging (individual room), transportation (fly or drive) to and from school from anywhere in the United States (no relocation), protective gear and some meals.

HCA has been helping military service members and veterans get the training necessary to enter the construction industry as a competent and professional operator of heavy equipment.  HCA will give students the Equipment Operator Certifications they need to make themselves a valuable commodity and readily employable.
