Volunteer Spotlight: David

Transitioning out of the military is more than a change in uniform—it’s a new mission. David Short first connected with Hire Heroes USA during a TAPS briefing as he prepared to retire. When his résumé slowed his search, he turned to our team for personalized one-on-one support. Translating years of service into clear civilian language, he was able to secure a new role. With a strong desire to keep serving, he decided to return to Hire Heroes USA as a volunteer.

Because he’s navigated transition himself, David brings real-world tactics to every conversation. He shares what worked, what didn’t, and the smart pivots that keep a search on track. Clients leave with actions they can take today and a simple plan for tomorrow—follow-ups, outreach, and measurable targets that keep them accountable.

His nonnegotiable advice is networking. Ask for help, and ask early. Use your connections for informational interviews, referrals, and honest feedback on résumés and LinkedIn profiles. No one advances alone, and reaching out is a mark of strength, not weakness.

Every client is unique, so David adapts to meet each person’s needs. Every story teaches him something new and helps him sharpen his approach for the next call, creating a steady cycle of learning and support that moves people toward meaningful employment.

He urges employers and community partners to look beyond their checklists and see potential. Veterans and military spouses learn fast, adapt under pressure, and lead through change. Though they may not have in-depth knowledge in a specific field, but if given the opportunity, they deliver—again and again.

David’s journey comes full circle: once a client, now the mentor he once needed. He meets veterans, transitioning service members, and military spouses with steady patience, clear direction, and firsthand knowledge. Because he’s walked the path, he speaks plainly about what moves a search forward and what doesn’t. That steady presence defines his service to our clients, creating impact for every person seeking the same support he once did.
