Volunteer Spotlight: Eric

At Hire Heroes USA, we radiate with pride for the countless military veterans and spouses who’ve found employment through our services. But when a former client decides to pay it forward, it’s the ultimate test of our impact.  Meet Eric Sagong, a living testament to this spirit.

Eric’s journey began as a Navy officer. After utilizing Hire Heroes USA during his own transition to civilian work, he confidently navigated this new landscape. Recognizing the significance of giving back, Eric stepped up to the plate. Since 2019, he’s been a guiding light, mentoring individuals interested in Logistics, Supply Chain Management, and Project Management. His expertise shines through in resume refinement and interview preparation, making a lasting impact.

“Whenever I am speaking with a client, I try to see things from multiple perspectives: as a business owner, a transitioning service member/job candidate, and a hiring manager, since I have been in all those positions.  As important as it is to be able to put yourself in the place of a client who is looking for a job, it is just as beneficial to see things from a hiring manager’s point of view.  The best way for someone looking for a job is to illustrate how they will provide value for the organization they are wanting to join.  Whenever I’m working with a HHUSA client, I make it a point to help them demonstrate the value that their experience as a veteran brings to a company in a clear and quantifiable way.”

The combination of roles that Eric has had helps him provide unique mentorship to our clients. Going through the transition process himself shows our clients that they can find success as well. Some of Eric’s consistent guidance includes:

“Be flexible in your approach to transitioning.  There is no one correct method to finding your career as a civilian.  It is important to be open to advice and feedback but also understand that everyone’s path isn’t the same.  You can get help in your career search from a multitude of sources, but ultimately, it’s up to you to decide when and how to execute.”

Eric believes that everyone has something to offer when it comes to helping veterans and their families, especially if they have gone through the process themselves. It makes the transition all the more rewarding when you share your path with others.

“The most rewarding part of being a volunteer is helping veterans who are where I was – looking to find a place in civilian life after having spent time in the armed forces.  No matter the branch they served in, whether they were enlisted, an officer, or the spouse of a service member, I feel a deep sense of camaraderie with the people I have the privilege of coaching and mentoring.”

Eric’s ability to share his success and experiences with our clients allows for an incredible boost in their confidence. His story isn’t just about career shifts, it’s about passing the torch. Eric’s journey is the embodiment of reciprocity and shared success. With each mentoring session, he’s creating a ripple effect and helping others embrace their true potential. We are so thankful to Eric for continuing to give back to our veterans and their families!
