Volunteer Spotlight: Megan
Every service member’s military journey is unique, but one thing is universal: they acquire a wealth of experiences and skills unparalleled in any other profession. At first glance, these skills may seem incredibly specific to the years spent in the military and otherwise unable to be used in private or civilian work. With the guidance of dedicated volunteers like Megan Mongell, service members can discover how their unique military skills are the crucial missing piece for securing their dream job.
Megan has been a volunteer with Hire Heroes USA for over 4 years and brings with her an extensive background in healthcare as the Associate Director of Oncology with AbbVie. With over 25 years of experience in the industry, this allows Megan to easily provide guidance and support to clients looking into many different roles.
“One of the ways I apply my leadership experience is by helping veterans translate their military skills and experiences into the language and context of the civilian job market. I understand the importance of highlighting transferable skills, such as leadership, teamwork, problem-solving, and agility, which are highly valuable in multiple industries. By helping veterans identify and articulate these skills, I assist them in effectively positioning themselves to potential employers.”
Helping a client translate their military skills usually opens the doors to many different industries and roles that they hadn’t even considered. Megan takes it upon herself to help the client navigate this new information as well. She familiarizes herself with industries and sectors that have a high demand for veterans and explains market trends and insights to her mentees. Megan skillfully ignites their curiosity about these opportunities, enabling them to envision a future on a new and exciting career path.
“My goal [as a volunteer] is to empower veterans to successfully navigate their career journeys and find fulfilling civilian careers that honor their experiences and skills gained through military service.”
Megan is deeply aware of the tremendous value that service members and their spouses can bring to the civilian workforce. She believes civilians should match the service members’ dedication to our country by actively helping them transition into rewarding civilian careers after their military service. We can volunteer our time in many ways that will allow this community to feel supported and empowered to find their dream career.
When asked why she continues to volunteer with Hire Heroes USA, Megan mentions:

It has allowed me to express my gratitude, connect with remarkable individuals, help others develop valuable career skills, and find a deeper sense of purpose.
