Volunteer Spotlight: Deontrez

Giving back to an organization that helped you get to where you are now is noble. At Hire Heroes USA, we celebrate those who have used our free employment services and volunteer to give back. Deontrez is one of them. He is a retired Army Sergeant First Class who enjoys helping other veterans and military members.

Why do you volunteer with Hire Heroes USA?

“When I entered the workforce after retirement, I thought finding a job would be easy. Unfortunately, this was not the case! I attended TAP (Transition Assistance Program) and other employment workshops, but the overall hiring process was overwhelming. I didn’t realize how complex navigating the job market is. I was paired with a Transition Specialist and he was very helpful. He revamped my resume and provided additional transition tips. The help didn’t stop with just my resume. Hire Heroes USA assisted during my interview process, as well. A Hire Heroes USA volunteer conducted a mock interview with me, and that provided the confidence I needed to be successful.”

Once he got into the workforce, Deontrez wanted to find a way to give back to other service members and veterans who were navigating the job market. He felt that since Hire Heroes USA had assisted him with his transition, he’d ask to become a volunteer.

Q: What would you tell someone about Hire Heroes USA who has never heard of us?

“Helping other veterans gives me a great sense of satisfaction and I am grateful that Hire Heroes USA has provided me with the opportunity to give back. If you are looking for a meaningful way to spend your time, volunteer with them now!”

Hire Heroes USA Receives $3 Million Investment from the A. James & Alice B. Clark Foundation

Two-year commitment will increase nonprofit’s capacity and expand its services

Today, Hire Heroes USA announced it has received a $3 million investment from the A. James & Alice B. Clark Foundation to increase its client capacity and expand its services. Hire Heroes USA is the preeminent nonprofit organization providing employment services to transitioning military members, veterans and military spouses across the United States and around the world.

The Clark Foundation’s two-year investment will allow Hire Heroes USA to add new staff positions, including Transition Specialists and new personnel for the virtual services, federal sector and mentoring teams. It will also fund the launch of a self-paced online program and will provide direct funding to sustain Hire Heroes USA’s mentoring program.

“We are grateful to the Clark Foundation for their commitment to veterans. This funding will have an immediate and long-term impact on Hire Heroes USA and the clients we serve,” said Christopher Plamp, chief executive officer and a decorated Air Force combat pilot. “This two-year investment is estimated to increase our capacity by about 30 percent. In real terms, that means Hire Heroes USA will have the potential to impact an additional 7,000 men and women and their families, through our free employment services – that’s significant.”

“We are excited about our partnership with Hire Heroes USA because we recognize that this investment will directly provide more veterans with access to necessary and effective employment resources and programming,” said Mike Monroe, director of Veterans Initiatives at the Clark Foundation. “The Foundation is committed to helping veterans’ organizations scale their capacity to meet the growing needs of our nation’s bravest.”

Hire Heroes USA, now in its 11th year, is forecasted to reach a milestone 30,000 lifetime hires before the end of the year. As the leading veteran service organization specifically targeting the issues of unemployment and underemployment among veterans, Hire Heroes USA continues to evolve, as does the suite of services it provides. These include resume, networking and interview assistance, federal employment guidance, online workshops and training modules, job matching, virtual career fairs and a job board that features thousands of job listings each month.

Hire Heroes USA Featured Employer: Keurig Dr Pepper

Keurig Dr Pepper is honored and feels fortunate to have a culture and employee community filled with veterans and heroes. This inclusive culture fosters an environment where all veterans and employees can bring their unique skills and experiences to our teams and shine. Our Military Employee Relations Group (ERG) is an organized group of employees who are active duty, veterans, military spouses, family members of a veteran, and civilian supporters who are dedicated to enhancing our commitment to veterans, including through our recruiting efforts. These efforts include recruiting veterans into all roles, positions, teams, departments, and locations on a mission to bring fresh thinking and new opportunities to the beverage industry. We’re building on our rich heritage to create the beverage company of the future, and our passion and commitment to hiring veterans is critical part of this success.

Here’s what veterans who work with us have to say:

  • “As a veteran myself, I transitioned from my time in active duty to KDP. I was met with a cohort of other veterans who
  • have shared experiences and understanding of our past to help me with the transition process. This feeling of family has continued since my first day at this company. I know I have a team of people, spread across the country that I can count on for anything.”
    — Katie Ball, Director Leadership Development & Training, Navy veteran

  • “I had an incredibly smooth transition from active duty Army to Keurig Dr Pepper. I received mentorship, training and guidance that allowed me to modify and enhance my leadership experience from the military and apply it in a manufacturing setting. KDP has a strong military presence and veteran support structure, which created natural networking opportunities throughout various departments and levels within the company, even while learning how to operate process-driven manufacturing.”
    — Nathaniel Corbridge, Plant Manager,  Army veteran
  • “Most veterans have been through a great amount of stress and balancing acts within their military time. We recognize that these situations help in the business world because, most often, the veterans will naturally step up to be the leader or they will be the ones that are looked at to be the unspoken leaders of the group. In the sales branch I manage, I have a veteran in each pivotal role amongst all departments. What we have among one another is transparency that the process will keep going, and if there is a hang-up, we will identify it and fix it.”
    — Micah Highwalking, Branch Manager – Army veteran

We’re proud of the many veterans who have chosen to make an impact and build their careers at Keurig Dr Pepper. Senior Vice President of Supply Chain and Army veteran Ken Verhulst identifies a few key reasons for their success: “From the ability to work as part of a team with a sense of urgency to a propensity for solving problems – veterans bring a skillset that easily fits our culture and allows them to hit the ground running.”

To all of our veterans, we thank you for your service. We know you have what it takes to be successful in our world. If you’re a veteran seeking a career opportunity, learn more about Keurig Dr Pepper at www.keurigdrpepper.com and view job openings at jobs.hireheroesusa.org
